This is the modern version of the Leyden Jar (sometimes spelled Leiden Jar).
The Leyden Jar stores static electricity and was the original form of the modern day capacitor.
The electrical charge is stored between the two conductive cups and is accessed via the electrode.
The jar may be charged with any static electric generator or any source of static electricity.
