Sodium Acetate
chemical formula: CH3COONa3H2O
( crystal/granular )
Supersaturated solutions of Sodium Acetate are used in hand warmers. By clicking on a metal disc in the liquid, the solution quickly crystallizes into a solid releasing heat. Heating the material returns it to its liquid state. Sodium Acetate is also used in the textile industry to neutralize Sulfuric acid waste streams, and as a photoresist while using Aniline dyes. It is also a pickling agent in Chrome tanning, and it helps to retard vulcanization of Chloroprene in synthetic rubber production. Sodium Acetate may be added to foods as a preservative; in this application it is usually labeled E262.
