Silicon
chemical element: Si
( Powder )
Silicon is a chemical element with the atomic number of 14. Although it is frequently called a metal, it is not one. It is a tetravalent metalloid. It has a high melting point of 2,577 F and is an extremely important material in the electronic industry - transistors & integrated circuits being fabricated from it. In pyrotechnics, it is added to compositions to produce a high temperature molten slag. These compositions find use in electric igniters that when energized, produce sparks & molten slag that insures the ignition of the surrounding material.
