Luminol
chemical formula: C8H7O3N3
( powder )
Luminol (5-Amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione) is a chemical that exhibits chemiluminescence - it produces light as a result of a chemical reaction. Luminol glows a blue when mixed with an oxidizer (usually Hydrogen Peroxide) and a catalyst. It is used by forensic investigators to detect scant amounts of blood left at crime scenes. Absolutely great for science fair experiments. Please note that although Luminol is an expensive chemical, only very tiny amounts are needed for experiments. A one gram container is sufficient for 10-12 experiments. We will shortly have the formula & step-by-step procedure for making Luminol glow on our Chemistry Experiments page.
