Probably the most
famous Crookes tube, this conical shaped Crookes tube has a metal
Maltese cross near its wider end.
When high voltage is applied between the cathode (narrow end of the
tube) and the anode, the metal cross will obstruct the high speed
electron flow. Electrons impacting on the glass cause it to fluoresce
and those blocked by the cross produce a shadow on the end of the tube.
This demonstrates the 'shadow effect' and fluorescence of glass.
The tube measures about 10"
long and 3" in diameter (at the large end) and comes with a stand
as shown.
Requires a high voltage DC power supply to operate. |
