Conduct experiments in Diamagnetic Levitation!
Here's a low-cost kit of parts that will allow you to experiment with levitating Neodymium magnets.

Magnetic levitation is easy using Bismuth Metal.
Bismuth metal is the most diamagnetic (opposes magnetic fields) of all metals.
You can perform magnetic levitation experiments with Bismuth using our small, high power Neodymium magnets. Depending on the size of the magnets and the amount of Bismuth metal used, magnets can be levitated at just about any desired height.
Bismuth metal melts easily on a stove top, so it can be cast into any shape or thickness desired.
It's also non- toxic, so it's safe for children to experiment with.
The image above shows a couple Bismuth slugs and one of our 3/16" gold plated magnets floating in air.
A great science fair project!

If you'd like to melt your own Bismuth slugs or discs to conduct experiments with magnetic levitation,
ultra pure Bismuth metal is available on our
Chemicals & Metals page .
On the other hand, if you'd like a kit of all the necessary components (magnets, instructions, etc.), along with the Bismuth slugs already melted into shape & sanded flat, we offer the kit below:
What's Included:
Everything you need to conduct levitation experiments is included with the kit.
- Two large Bismuth Slugs with faces sanded flat
- Two 3/16" cube gold plated 'floater' Neodymium magnets
- Four 1/8" x 1/16" disc gold plated 'floater' Neodymium magnets
- One 1/2" dia. x 1" long rod 'lifter' Neodymium magnet
- Complete instructions & diagrams
You can build the magnetic levitator as simple or complex as you wish. The 13 ounces of Bismuth metal included can be re-melted into any shape you desire for advanced experimentation.
