General Uranium Ore Info
Our Uranium ore is from a variety of sites throughout the USA, mined by
our own prospectors. All radioactive ore is sold by radiation level, not ore type or physical
size. This does not mean that you will get a sample that measures very
high and is the size of a dime. All our samples are of typical 'useful
size' which is in the 2" to 4" range, with most samples being
about 3" across. The exception to this is our Uranium Ore Vial
which contains small chips of various ores, as well as our Cloud Chamber
Sources (when available) which are also intentionally small to operate in the limited
space of a Cloud Chamber instrument.
Uranium Ore samples may contain primary and secondary Uranium ores including: Carnotite (bright yellow),
Uraninite (black crystal), Pitchblende (jet black), Uranophane (canary yellow), Gummite (rust brown),
Tyuyamunite (pale green), Schroeckingerite (greenish-yellow)
Ores.
How Ore is Measured
The radiation measurements stated on all of our radioactive items is
guaranteed to be accurate. It is measured with a calibrated,Stabilized
Assay Meter, not just a simple Geiger Counter.
We measure the total Beta and Gamma radiation emissions from each sample
in CPM (Counts Per Minute). The number stated under each sample is the
combined Beta and Gamma emissions, taken from the area on the sample
that produces the highest reading. We DO NOT measure the Alpha radiation emissions or use a "Pancake" type
probe,as that produces falsely high readings. We guarantee that all
samples we sell measure exactly what is stated.
Ore Uses & Applications
Lower level ores are ideal for testing Geiger Counters or other
radiation detection equipment. Higher level ores are intended for laboratory experimentation or for
radiological training purposes - for example where the hidden ore sample
has to be located with instrumentation.
Our Cloud Chamber samples are of a higher radiation level and
intentionally small. This is necessary due to the limited area available in Cloud
Chambers and the need to produce a large amount, and various types of
visible radiation tracks at a high rate.
For mineral collectors, all Uranium Ore is useful and the different
varieties are rare & fascinating.
Special Note: We are currently down to the last of our Uranium ore samples and only have 'A' level samples available at this time. Our Uranium mine is still inaccessible due to snow so it will be closer to the end of April before we can get our prospectors into our mine and digging for this year's supply.
